Day 7

I tried 2 different ways to create a teacher webpage:

#1: We are required to maintain a teacher Webpage that is connected to the district Website. It must be updated weekly. Most elementary teachers just copy and paste their newsletters on their site. Yes...we still do a weekly class newsletter that goes home every Friday. This is the site address

#2: Since the assignment was to create a teacher page from scratch, I created another one, This one essentially contains all the information I give out through a PowerPoint on Open House night. It contains many links though.

Day 6

With regards to Primary Sources...they are great, but mostly for older grades. While researching WebQuests, I found very little on the first and second grade levels that were age appropriate, interesting, and worth the time spent on it. That won't keep me searching though. I think it would be great for enrichment students, independent study, and perhaps center time when a parent volunteer is available.

I also have to keep in mind that 6 & 7 year olds are just learning their keyboarding and word processing skills. Internet searching has to wait until some of these important skills are practiced. This all take time!

Day 5

Still working ahead...

Today was spent on searching for age appropriate WebQuests that I could use in my classroom. The problem with over 50% of them was that the links within the site were no longer available, therefore, I can't use them. The other problem was finding some that fit into our curriculum units. The other problem was in the length of time required to do them. I can give my students 20 minutes during center time and then another 20 during tech time, which isn't sufficient time to complete most of the WebQuests in a decent amount of time without dragging on.

Day 4

I spent a lot of time searching for age appropriate (second grade) virtual field trips that would fit into my curriculum. I finally found 3 great ones and 1 passable one that would fit:

*The First Thanksgiving-Details of the voyage, daily life, and feast from Pilgrim and Wampanoag perspectives.
*Community Club-Hear about the jobs of 8 Community Workers
*Mouth Power-cleaning, growing teeth, dentistry, and food pyramid
*The Making of Chocolate-tour Hershey's factories and process of making chocolate from bean to bar.

Day 3

What do you mean Al Gore didn't invent the internet. Way to burst my bubble! No...really. I was surprised to read that it had its origins in the 60's, which makes it as old as I am!

Did Al Gore invent the Internet? According to a CNN transcript of an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Al Gore said,"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Al Gore was not yet in Congress in 1969 when ARPANET started or in 1974 when the term Internet first came into use. Gore was elected to Congress in 1976. In fairness, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf acknowledge in a paper titled Al Gore and the Internet that Gore has probably done more than any other elected official to support the growth and development of the Internet from the 1970's to the present .

Day 2

I need to work ahead so I won't have so much to do next week when I'm in another class too. The Website Journal is a great opportunity for me to organize the website list I already have in place. I collect site URLs because they are a required component to my district teacher page I must keep updated every week. I'm up to over 30!

Day 1

Surprise...this is a 2 week course instead of the one week July 16-20 that I registered for back in April! I'm taking another class next week, which means I'll be a very busy lady with double the work! Thanks PDE!
